Solid week in Champions League betting picks last week as we hit on 1/2 bets in the first batch of Round of 16 games. That winner, however, came at good odds of +188 as we picked Atletico Madrid and Liverpool to combine for under 1.5 goals in their matchup!
The action continues this week with another four massive games, getting underway on Tuesday afternoon (ET). We have a couple of best bets for the action below.
Champions League Betting Picks
Chelsea vs Bayern Munich
Tuesday 3pm (ET)
Chelsea are coming off a good win in the Premier League over Tottenham on the weekend and more importantly, they did so while resting a few of their key players. Willian and Tammy Abraham came off the bench after the 70th minute in the win while Pedro missed the entire game for Chelsea, which should freshen up the three important players for the mid-week clash against the German side.
The Blues currently sit in fourth place in the EPL with a 13-5-9 record through 27 games and while it’s incredibly important to keep performing in the Premier League to ensure a top four finish, they’ll be throwing everything into the rest of their Champions League campaign.
The last meeting between the Blues and Bayern Munich in the Champions League came in the famous 2012 final, when the London side were victorious on penalties, clinching their first and only Champions League title. Scoring has been a main theme when these two teams meet in the Champions League. In the four games before the 2012 final, the two produced a whopping 17 goals at an average of 4.25 per game.
Bayern Munich are also the highest scoring team in the Bundesliga this season, by a far stretch. Apart from their rivals, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, no one even comes close to the 65 goals that Bayern has plundered through 23 games this season, at an average of almost three per game. In their last Champions League game, they slotted three past another London team in Tottenham on their way to a comfortable win.
Bayern look the much stronger side here, especially given the Blues inconsistent form in the Premier League of late. They have the ability to score goals in high quantities and should be too much offensively for the Blues.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City
Wednesday 3pm (ET)
One of the matchups of the round sees Real Madrid hosting Manchester City on Wednesday from 3pm. Manchester City have had a dominant season in the Premier League, unfortunately for them, it has come in the midst of a historic season by Liverpool, resulting in the Citizens currently trailing by a whopping 19 points.
With the league title out of the question, they’ll turn their attention to the Champions League, which is the one trophy that has alluded them over their dominant stretch which started in 2011-12 with an EPL title win.
Over that period, their best finish in the Champions League has been back to back appearances in the quarter finals over the last two seasons. They’ll be desperate to go one step further this year, but have a tough road ahead with a Round of 16 fixture against Spanish juggernaut Real Madrid.
Madrid sit in second place in the La Liga, just two points behind rivals Barcelona, and defence has been the highlight of their season. Through 25 games this year, they have allowed just 17 goals, which is the best of any Spanish top flight team and second only to Liverpool across the big five European Leagues.
With defence at such a premium in the first leg of a home-and-away fixture, we think this could be a low scoring affair. In their last two Champions League games, the two teams have combined for just one total goal.
