Southampton vs Chelsea
St Mary’s Stadium, Saturday 7:30am (ET)
Thomas Tuchel’s inclusion as manager has been an inspired choice, revitalising a season that looked destined for failure when Frank Lampard was sacked. Since Tuchel’s has taken over, Chelsea haven’t lost and have peeled off four straight wins which has catapulted them into fourth place on the table.
After an upset win over Liverpool to start 2021 it has been all downhill since for Southampton who have lost six consecutive matches, including a 9-0 smashing at the hands of Manchester United. This Chelsea side simply has too much talent for Southampton to handle. Mason Mount and Jorghino look set to run riot, whilst after finally ending his goal drought last week, Timo Werner will be full of confidence against the Southampton defence which has conceded the sixth most goals in the league this season.
Keeper Edouard Mendy has been in excellent form all season long, and his defence is finally backing him up, Chelsea have conceded just one goal in its last four matches. Tuchel’s men are playing an inspired brand of football, and they’ll have no troubles getting past Southampton.
Liverpool vs Everton
Anfield, Saturday 12:30pm (ET)
We haven’t seen a Merseyside derby with this much magnitude in a long time, as Everton head to Anfield to face off against their cross town rivals. Liverpool are placed sixth on the table after a 3-1 loss to Leicester, and now only sit three points ahead Everton who are in seventh place, and have a game in hand on their rivals.
Despite struggles of the reigning champions, the Merseyside derby comes at a perfect time. Since 2010 Liverpool are undefeated against Everton in the Premier League, with nine wins and twelve draws. Everton were upset 2-0 by eighteenth placed Fulham last week, and suffered a 3-1 loss during the week to Manchester City who dominated them from start to finish. Everton couldn’t end the horror streak against a Liverpool side that was missing plenty of it’s best players earlier in the season.
Star striker Mo Salah has been excellent in Merseyside derbies, scoring twice in his four appearances against Everton since joining Liverpool, including in the 2-2 draw when the two sides faced off back in October. The signs are looking bleak for Everton. Liverpool are due to get out of their bad spell, the Toffees are out of form and coming off a short turn around, expect the defending champions to extend their unbeaten streak against their rivals.
Manchester United vs Newcastle
Old Trafford, Monday 2:00pm (ET)
After a thirteen game unbeaten streak spanning from November 2020, to January 2021, Manchester United have picked up only one win and two draws in their last three Premier League fixtures. They get a golden chance to get back on the winners list when Newcastle travels to Old Trafford.
This clash sees one the league’s best offences face off against one of the league’s worst defences. The Red Devils are the number one scoring team in the Premier League, netting fifty goals in season ‘20/’21, whilst Newcastle have been the seventeenth ranked defence, conceding 40 goals. Manchester United have scored 13 goals in their last three Premier League fixtures, highlighted by an incredible 9-0 win over Southampton where they did not let their foot off the gas at any stage during the game.
Attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been on a mission this season, with fourteen goals and nine assists, Fernandes is second in the Premier League for combined goals and assists with 23. Newcastle are in a terrible form slump, only winning two of their last thirteen league matches. With the goal scoring form the Red Devils have been in of late, they look set for a big win against the struggling Newcastle.
