AFL Round 9 Betting Picks

Sydney Swans vs Collingwood Magpies

SCG, Friday 11:45pm ET

Sydney were gallant in defeat against the undefeated Melbourne Demons last weekend. The Swans have cooled off a touch after their hot start to the season, winning just one of their past four games. Regardless, it’s still been a productive start for the season for their young squad.

Collingwood have had a nightmare start to their 2021 campaign, which has put a lot of pressure on their coaching staff. Importantly, the Magpies were able to secure a win over the Kangaroos last weekend, because if they lost that one then heads would’ve rolled.

The Swans haven’t been winning as much as they’d like of late, but they’ve still been in far better form than the Magpies and will start as the deserving favorites as a result. At home and in need of a win to stay in to break out of a mini funk, we have the Swans getting the job done comfortably.

Hawthorn Hawks vs North Melbourne

UOTS, Saturday 12:10am ET

Hawthorn were no match for the Eagles in their most recent outing, going down by 38 points on their home deck. It was the Hawks third loss by 6+ goals from their past four games, which just tells you where they’re right now. They coming into this weekend sitting second last on the ladder with two wins to their name.

North Melbourne are having a season for the ages, and not in a good way. They’ve lost all eight of their games and have a dismal percentage of just 52.7%. Their performances in recent weeks have been a touch better than the beginning of the season, but they certainly didn’t set the bar very high.

This is a battle between the two worst teams in the competition through eight rounds, so don’t expect too great of a spectacle. Both teams really struggle to hit targets inside 50 and score as a result, which leads us to believe this will be a low-scoring affair that falls under the total points line.

Essendon Bombers vs Fremantle Dockers

Marvel Stadium, Saturday 11:10pm ET

Essendon continued their losing form against the Giants last weekend in a two-point defeat. The Bombers had their chances to steal it at the death but weren’t able to capitalise and have fallen to 2-6 on the season as a result, which places them in 15th spot on the ladder.

Fremantle battled hard against Brisbane in their Round 8 fixture, but were outclassed in their four-goal loss. That’s now back-to-back losses for the first time this season for the Dockers who are now level at 4-4 and sit in 10th spot on the ladder, but just percentage outside the top eight.

The Dockers have been the slightly better of these two teams this season, but they’ve also had the better draw. Despite that, the Bombers should have the narrow edge on them on their home deck, as the Dockers are 1-4 in away games this season. We predict the Bombers to win this game by 39 points or less.
