AFL Round 8 Betting Picks
GWS Giants vs Essendon Bombers
Giants Stadium, Friday 11:45pm ET
GWS have bounced back from their slow start to the season with wins in three of their past four games. They were extra impressive last weekend in their demolition job of the Crows, defeating them on the road by 67 points. Now at 3-4, the Giants have a chance to draw level on the ledger this weekend.
Essendon played their part in a thrilling game against their rivals in Carlton last weekend, but came out on the wrong end of it by 16 points. It’s been another frustrating start to the season for Bombers fans with their team sitting at 2-5 after what has really been a pretty soft draw to date.
The Giants are certainly the form team of the two, but the Bombers are so unpredictable that they could easily win this game if they play their best footy. Instead, we’ll be playing the ‘unders’ in the total points market as it’s saluted in each of the past four meetings between these sides and with how good the Giants defense has been of late, all indications lead to another low-scoring affair.
Gold Coast Suns vs St Kilda Saints
Metricon Stadium, Saturday 12:10am ET
Gold Coast had just one win to their name through the first five rounds of the season, but have come to life in their past two games with convincing wins against the Swans and the Magpies. Their ability to hit the scoreboard has been the big change from early on in the season, although their recent opponents aren’t necessarily known for their defensive prowess.
St Kilda have had a topsy-turvy start to the season and are quickly becoming the most unpredictable team in the league alongside the Bombers. They’re yet to string consecutive wins together this season, but their recent 69-point win over the Hawks was easily their best performance thus far and might act as a springboard.
This is a little bit of a tricky match to get a read on, but the one thing that’s for sure is the Saints best football is clearly better than the Suns best football. This is also certainly the Saints best chance to snag consecutive wins this season and we’re prepared to back them into do just that with a smaller bet stake.
Hawthorn Hawks vs West Coast Eagles
MCG, Saturday 11:10pm ET
Hawthorn were thoroughly disappointing against the Saints in Round 7 where they were blown out of the water by 69 points. That came after their huge comeback win over the Crows in Round 6, so perhaps it was just an emotional letdown. The Hawks are now 2-5 on the season and sit 16th on the ladder.
West Coast have had a roller coaster first seven rounds where they’ve alternated between wins and losses from week to week. Last weekend they were far too good against the Dockers in the Western Derby, making it 4/4 wins on their home deck this season.
The Hawks have obviously had a tough start to the season, but we do see them as a better side than where they currently sit on the ladder. They’ll be looking to bounce back from a blowout loss against the Saints last weekend and we believe they have a legitimate chance of knocking off the Eagles at odds. The Eagles are 0/3 away from home this season and were thumped by 97 points on their travels last time out. It won’t be a big bet, but we’re keen to have a speck at the Hawks in the head-to-head market here.
