AFL Round 5 Betting Picks
West Coast Eagles vs Collingwood Magpies
Optus Stadium, Friday 6:10am ET
West Coast Eagles looked on their way to a comfortable win over the Saints last weekend until the momentum completely shifted midway through the match and the Eagles went onto lose. They’re now an even 2-2 on the season having won both home games and lost both away outings.
Collingwood Magpies were the short-priced favorites to win their Round 4 matchup against the then winless Giants, but it certainly didn’t play out that way as they went onto lose by a comfortable margin. The Magpies are now 1-3 and have an injury list that isn’t a sight for saw eyes if you’re a Magpies fan.
The Magpies famously won an elimination final against the Eagles last year in Perth, but we foresee a completely different result this time around. Lack of form and some injuries to key players gives the Magpies virtually no chance in this game, so we’ll be taking the Eagles to win easily.
Adelaide Crows vs Fremantle Dockers
Adelaide Oval, Saturday 11:10pm ET
Adelaide Crows were able to fend off the winless North Melbourne last weekend to continue their dream start to 2021. They won just three games in the whole of last year but have already matched that tally through four rounds this time around. Tex Walker continues to dominate up forward in a bizarre return to his best.
Fremantle Dockers were really disappointing against the Blues in Round 3 but were able to bounce back immediately with a strong home win against the Hawks last weekend. Captain Nat Fyfe returned from injury and was instrumental in their win despite kicking 0.6 for the game.
This is an intriguing matchup and one that the bookies have found hard to find a favourite for. The Dockers are the better team on paper but the Crows are at home and are in winning form, making this a coin toss in our opinion. Instead, we’ll be banking on this being a cagey affair that will see the total points fall short of what looks to be a rather large total.
Hawthorn Hawks vs Melbourne Demons
MCG, Sunday 1:20am ET)
Hawthorn Hawks put up a brave fight away in Perth against the Dockers last weekend, but weren’t able to be in front when it mattered. The Hawks are clearly in the midst of a rebuild and will be liking what they’re seeing from a few of their young stars, especially Jiath who has been a revelation in the backline so far this year.
Melbourne Demons couldn’t have asked for a better start to season 2021. They’ve won all four of their games and are coming off a big win over the Cats that we saw coming all the way. Whether or not the Demons are the real deal remains to be seen, but they’ve certainly put their best foot forward early.
The Demons will start this clash as the clear favorites and deservedly so; however, the Hawks always play better at the MCG and will be desperate to get another win under their belt. We sense there may just be a little bit of an emotional drop off from the Demons after their classy win over the Cats last round, which should open up the door for the Hawks to cover the spread.
