AFL Round 3 Betting Picks
Richmond Tigers vs Sydney Swans
MCG, Friday 10:45pm ET
Richmond Tigers are yet to put a foot wrong through the first two rounds of their back-to-back premiership defense. Last weekend they proved far too classy for the rebuilding Hawks, making it consecutive 4+ goal wins to start the season. Dustin Martin has had a superb start to his individual campaign and is the early clubhouse leader for the Brownlow Medal.
Sydney Swans have been the early surprise packet this season and have been absolute box office. It’s still very early in the season, but it looks as though their recruitment team has done an exceptional job with some of the young kids they’ve brought in who have made an immediate impact. The Swans are 2-0 and sit third on the ladder.
The Tigers will start this Friday night game as the overwhelming favorites and it’s not hard to understand why when looking at the contrasting results of these clubs over the past 4-5 season. In saying that, the Swans look a rejuvenised unit this season and we see them as a genuine threat to take a scalp here, making the big + spread look great value.
Carlton Blues vs Fremantle Dockers
Marvel Stadium, Sunday 12:20am ET
Carlton Blues were optimistic about their chances to make the finals this season after a long stint in the wilderness; however, from what we’ve seen from them in the opening two rounds, it’s hard to see that materialise. The Blues were thoroughly outplayed by the Magpies in Round 2 and their superstar and captain, Patrick Cripps, was down on form once again.
Fremantle Dockers had a rough opening round loss against the Demons, but managed to bounce back in a big way in Round 2 when they dominated the Giants from start to finish. The Dockers young guns look to improving steadily, although they have a growing injury list that certainly isn’t ideal at this point in the season.
The Blues will enter this clash as the firm favorites, which is probably only due to the fact that they have the home ground advantage. We certainly don’t agree with how this game has been priced and believe the Dockers should be at least even money. We’re more than happy to be on the underdogs to get the job done in this one.
Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn Hawks
MCG, Monday 12:20am ET
Geelong Cats managed to claw their way to their first win of the season when they beat the Lions at home last weekend in controversial fashion. They certainly got the benefit of a few non-calls late which will have the Lions feeling very hard done by. That aside, the Cats are now 1-1 and will be looking to build some momentum going forward.
Hawthorn Hawks won their Round 1 battle with the Bombers in crazy fashion after being down by as many as 40 points in the third quarter; however, they weren’t able to produce similar heroics against the Tigers last weekend, going down comfortably to the defending champions. The Hawks also suffered a couple of injuries to key players against the Tigers, which will force them to make some unwanted changes this weekend.
Of these two clubs, we’d have to say the Hawks have probably fared slightly better in their opening two games, which makes it a touch surprising to see them as such big underdogs in the markets. The Cats haven’t shown enough to warrant a near four-goal spread advantage, so we’ll be siding with the underdogs once again.
