Week 1 in the AFL Finals threw up some thrilling matches and while eight teams began the week, just six remain. Port Adelaide and Brisbane won the qualifying finals to send them straight through to the prelims next week.
This week, there will be two massive semi finals on Friday and Saturday morning respectively, and both will see one team eliminated! As usual, we have a full preview and betting picks for both games below.
AFL Finals Semi Finals Betting Picks
Richmond Tigers vs St Kilda Saints
The reigning premiers entered their contest against the Lions as favorites but couldn’t get the job done, going down by 14 points. They will now host the Saints, who beat them in their only matchup this season back in Round 5. The Tigers were without their star forward Tom Lynch against the Lions, but he will be back in the line-up this week.
The Saints dominated their elimination final for the first three quarters, before a lapse in concentration in the final period allowed the Dogs to come within just a few points. St Kilda held on to record their first finals win in almost a decade and will be looking for a massive upset against the Tigers to make their first prelim since 2010.
The Tigers start as heavy favorites here and while we think they will win, the 19.5 point line is a little too hefty for our liking. The highest winning margin in Week 1 of the finals was just 16 points and with reduced quarter length and dewy conditions on the Gold Coast, we think this will be another relatively close game. Back the Saints to cover here.
Geelong Cats vs Collingwood Magpies
The Cats rounded out the season with seven of eight wins to claim a spot in the top four and the finals double chance that comes with it. They had the unenviable task of travelling to Adelaide in Week 1 to take on the minor premier Power and were beaten by just 16 points. Still, throughout the week they have been talked down and many critics are now believing they are just making up the numbers.
The Pies travelled to Perth and recorded a one point win over the Eagles to keep their season alive in what was a thrilling gae. Big American Mason Cox booted three goals in the first quarter to give Collingwood the ascendency and while the Eagles fought back in the second half, it wasn’t enough.
The Pies have the momentum here but there is no doubt the Cats have been the more consistent side and on paper, they have more talent. We think they bounce back here and cover what is a pretty small spread at just 6.5 points.
