There’s no rest for the wicked. English Premier League soccer is back for year 2019-20 in just one week’s time. Last year it was Manchester City who were crowned Champions of England in another record breaking year, but Liverpool were right on their hammer for the entirety of their campaign. Will it be those two powerhouses fighting it out for the silverware again, or will another club announce themselves as the team to beat?

EPL Outright Market

The modern day ‘big six’ are once again expected to fight it out for the Premier League title in the upcoming season. This six, which comprises of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Chelsea, are always the biggest spenders in the league and have the greatest opportunity to achieve success. This season, however, we believe it’ll once again be out of Manchester City and Liverpool that lifts the trophy, such has been their dominance in the past two seasons. So, who wins this year? Let’s take a look at the two powerhouses.

Manchester City

2018-19 was another season of tremendous success for Manchester City, winning their second straight EPL title after a thrilling title race. They ended up finishing a single points ahead of Liverpool to win the title, achieving the second most amount of league points in a single season in the EPL’s history. Amazingly, the most amount was achieved by them the year prior.

After being the hunters for such a long time, City are now clearly the hunted. They’ve lost just five matches across two full EPL seasons and have achieved just shy of 200 league points during that period.

The Citizens success in 2018-19 wasn’t just limited to the EPL. They also won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, becoming the first team in history to win the English treble. The only blemish of their season? Bowing out in the Champions League.

The Sky Blues won’t change too much this season in terms of personnel. They say goodbye to former captain and an all-round champion of the club in Vincent Kompany, but will welcome a couple of skilful youngsters to the team.

Liverpool

What an amazing season it was for Liverpool in 2018-19. They achieved the most league points in club history, eventually finishing second to City in devastatingly close fashion, but made amends quickly when they defeated Tottenham a week later in the Champions League final.

The Reds Champions League title was their second in club history – both coming since the turn of the 21st century. It certainly wasn’t their main goal for the season as they had the EPL title in their sites, but it’s one hell of a consolation prize.

Like their main rivals in the Citizens, Liverpool haven’t made too many changes to their list and will probably start the first game of the season with a very familiar starting XI. The front three of Mane, Firmino, and Salah will spearhead the squad, while Van Dijk and Alisson will be the generals in defence. If anything, expect youngsters Brewster and Wilson to get a bit of opportunity.

Prediction

At the end of the day, Manchester City are everyone’s favourites on the back of their past seasons form. However, they’re far too short in the markets to have any investment in, especially when you consider how volatile and competitive the league can be. For this reason, we’ll be taking Liverpool’s odds, which is generous when you consider how close they came last season. Liverpool haven’t had the best of pre-season’s by any stretch, but you can never read too much into a team’s form until the real stuff begins. Until then, Liverpool remain the value play.
