NBA Picks – Tuesday, February 11th
Portland Trail Blazers at New Orleans Pelicans
8.00pm ET, Smoothie King Center
Boston Celtics at Houston Rockets
9.30pm ET, Toyota Center
Until recently, Damian Lillard was on a phenomenal scoring tear. At one point, he was averaging greater than 48 points per contest over a six-game span, and although he has inevitably cooled down from those great heights, he is still third in the league in scoring this season, behind only Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks (by 0.1 ppg) and the other man in this bit, James Harden.
Given that these are two of the three best scorers in the NBA, it is not an outlandish predictions that they will both scored 35 points tonight. What will specifically help the pair of them, though, are their opponents tonight. The Rockets will go up against the Boston Celtics in a meeting of two of the best teams in the NBA; these are the games in which the Rockets need Harden to come through more than ever. Harden will get his usual enormously large share of the ball, if not an even larger one, and although the Celtics can run good individual defenders at him such as Jaylen Brown, individual defenders are not a problem for Harden necessarily when he can shoot the step-back like he does. There is no defence for that.
Lillard meanwhile will go up against the New Orleans Pelicans, and although their backcourt of Lonzo Ball and Jrue Holiday actually features two of their better individual defensive players, their team defence overall is poor. As we talked about last week, giving Lillard a phenomenal offensive load is the best if not only chance the Blazers have of sneaking into the bottom of the Western Conference playoff seedings, and with the young Pelicans looking to get up and down the court, this should be a high-scoring contest. If you put the world’s hottest scorer in a high-scoring contest, expect him to score a lot.
Chicago Bulls at Washington Wizards
Capital One Arena, 7.00pm ET
In a look at the Chicago Bulls last week, we explored quite how many players they have on their injured list, including four of their regular starters. This is still true today. And as a result, the one starter that remains healthy, Zach LaVine, has embraced the opportunity to try and make up for those absences and score as many points as possible.
LaVine certainly is a flawed player, someone who has improved slightly in his playmaking and defensive abilities but who is still lacking in these departments, in terms of both his skill and his intent. LaVine only really looks to score the ball when he is on the court, and the good news for us from the betting point of view that he is very good at it. An excellent shooter both from mid- and long-range areas, off both the catch and the dribble, LaVine takes a very high volume of shots for the Bulls as constructed, and particularly so in crunch time. He is therefore always a threat to go off for a high-scoring night.
Furhter helping him and us tonight is the fact that the Wizards are one of the worst defensive teams in the league, and with Bradley Beal at shooting guard, they have one of the lesser defensive shooting guards around as well. Beal is essentially the uber-LaVinr, a player who plays similar to him but better in all facets, except for perhaps his defence, where like LaVine, Bral has not impressed at all this season either. Indeed, it is likely what cost him a spot in the All-Star Game.
A poor defensive unit for the Wizards combined with the individual limitations of Beal and their inability to switch their big men, combined with Chicago’s relative lack of health and the need For LaVine to do so much offensively, makes it seem quite likely that Zach will meet the scoring part of this double. The harder part might be the Bulls getting the win.
