NBA Picks – Monday, January 6th
Denver Nuggets @ Atlanta Hawks
7:30pm ET, State Farm Arena
Our best bet from the nine game slate comes from the intriguing matchup between the Nuggets and the Hawks in Atlanta from 7:30pm Eastern Time. The Nuggets come into this off a really poor 14 point loss to the Wizards who were severely undermanned. That loss was their third from their last six games, which could turn into a bit more than a mere form slump if they can’t find their better form sooner rather than later. Despite some recent struggles, the Nuggets are still sitting in second spot in the West standings at 24-11 on the season.
The Hawks have finally come out of their losing streak and look like they’re now ready to start winning games again. Last time out they were impressive winners at home against the Pacers, defeating them by five points on the back of Trae Young’s 41 points and eight assists and Kevin Huerter’s 26 points and eight rebounds. That win was the Hawks second from their past three games and takes their season record to 8-28, which is still the worst in the league coming into this game.
The current form of these clubs makes for an intriguing matchup in Atlanta on Monday night. The Hawks were able to knock off a great team in the Pacers without John Collins last time out and will now get the gun forward back in the starting line-up for this one. On the flip side, the Nuggets are 9-7 on the road this season, which shows teams have been able to take it up to them and challenge them regularly. All things considered, we believe the Hawks will have their chances to win this game and expect them to cover the rather big spread.
Best Pick: Atlanta Hawks +7 (-110 at BetRivers)
OKC Thunder @ Philadelphia 76ers
7pm ET, Wells Fargo Center
Our best value pick of the day comes from arguably the matchup of the day between the Thunder and the Sixers in Philadelphia from 7pm Eastern Time. The Thunder come into this as one of the best form teams of the league having won each of their last five and nine of their last 10 games. Meanwhile, the Sixers have lost each of their last four and seven of their last 10. The Thunder are 20-15 on the season and come into this in seventh spot in the West, and the Sixers 23-14 and fifth in the East.
This is a really intriguing matchup considering the form of the two sides coming in. The Thunder (9-1) and the Sixers (3-7) have been in totally contrasting form, which makes it interesting to see the Sixers as such short priced favorites. Both clubs will be at pretty much full strength, so there will be no excuses there. Also, they’ve already met once this season in Oklahoma and it was the Thunder who came out on top by eight points (127-119). All in all, there are a couple of teams with the chance of an upset on Monday, but we see the Thunder as the most likely.
Value Pick: OKC Thunder (+275 at BetRivers)
