As always, we’ve got you covered with picks from the key clashes on Matchday 10!
Leicester vs Arsenal
Saturday 7:30am ET, King Power Stadium
Arsenal travel to the King Power Stadium on the back of a five game unbeaten streak, which has seen them move into tenth place. Leicester have worked their way into ninth after back to back wins over Manchester United and Brentford, and are beginning to show the form that has seen them pushing for a Champions League berth in the last two seasons.
These two sides are in good form, and look like they are capable of challenging for European football. Leicester’s resurgence has come largely off the back of Jamie Vardy, who is second in the golden boot race with seven goals from nine games. Vardy is in sublime touch, netting four goals from his last four Premier League matches. Not only is Vardy having an excellent season, he’s coming up against his favourite Premier League opponent. Vardy has scored more goals against Arsenal than any other side he’s played against, scoring eleven goals from thirteen Premier League matches against Arsenal. Home ground advantage will play a crucial role in this clash, as Leicester have been solid at home this season, possessing a 2-1-1 record at home this season. Arsenal have struggled away from the Emirates this season, winning just one of four away games this season.
This matchup pits two of the most in-form teams in the league against each other, as they look to surge up the Premier League table. Leicester have been a much better side than Arsenal across the last 24 months, and it’s hard to see the Gunners defence finding a way to keep Vardy out of the game. This will be an exciting game, but the Foxes will be too good.
Liverpool vs Brighton
Saturday 10:00am ET, Anfield
Liverpool are arguably the most in-form team in the world at the moment, completely obliterating Watford and Manchester United in the last two weeks, with back to back 5-0 wins. The Reds host the fifth placed Brighton, who have won just one of their past five Premier League games. Liverpool are the only undefeated team in the Premier League this season, with six wins and three draws from nine matches.
After a disappointing campaign last season, the Reds have gotten back to their best, with the Premier League’s number one ranked attack (27 goals) and the third best defence (6 goals conceded). Brighton have scored just nine goals from their nine games this season, and they just don’t have the attacking firepower to go with Liverpool over 90 minutes. Mo Salah has absolutely dominated the start of this season, scoring 10 goals in nine Premier League games, and has scored in 10 consecutive games across all competitions. Salah has performed well against the Seagulls in the past, netting 5 goals and tallying 4 assists in eight Premier League appearances against Brighton.
Brighton haven’t enjoyed coming up against the Reds in recent years, going 1-1-6 against Liverpool in their last eight Premier League fixtures. Liverpool are putting together a historic season in front of goal, with two 5 goal victories, three 3 goal victories and one two goal victory. With the form that Liverpool’s front three are in, things could get ugly for Brighton early on in this game.
Newcastle vs Chelsea
Saturday 10:00am ET, St James’ Park
The league leaders put on an empathic show last weekend, with a 7-0 thumping of Aston Villa, led by a Mason Mount hattrick. Chelsea take on the winless Newcastle this weekend, looking to add to the misery of the Magpies, who look destined for a relegation battle.
Newcastle have four draws and five losses from nine games this season, and have the second worst defence in the competition this season, conceding 20 goals in nine games. In contrast, Chelsea have the second best attack in the Premier League, having scored 23 goals this season. Chelsea’s greatest strength so far this season has been their squad depth, with their ability to get performances from their entire squad being second to none. Chelsea have had fourteen different goal scorers this season, the most of any team in the Premier League by a considerable margin.
Newcastle sacked manager Steve Bruce during the week, adding even more turmoil to a club that is struggling badly on field this season. Newcastle are one of only two teams that are yet to record a clean sheet this season, and that doesn’t look likely to change with the form the league leaders are in. Chelsea have enjoyed playing against Newcastle, winning five of their last six Premier League matches against the Magpies. Newcastle are 0-2-2 at home this season, and with the league leaders coming to town, there’s more pain in store for Newcastle.
