We’ve got you covered with previews and picks from the weekend’s biggest games!
Leicester vs Newcastle
King Power Stadium, Friday 3:00pm (ET)
Despite sitting in the top four for nearly the entire season, Leicester’s spot in the top four could come under serious threat. With West Ham and Chelsea breathing down their neck, this week is a must win for the Foxes. Leicester host seventeenth placed Newcastle that has been awful on the road this season, with a 4-9-9 record in away matches.
Leicester have enjoyed playing Newcastle in recent seasons, having won three consecutive Premier League fixtures against the Magpies, and eight of their past ten Premier League games against Newcastle. James Maddison and Jamie Vardy have played crucial roles in this success against Newcastle, the Leicester stars have both netted two goals in their past three games against Newcastle.
Leicester have a lot more to play for this weekend, and with the talent gap between the two sides, it’s hard to see Newcastle finding a way to win this one. The Foxes have had excellent depth this season, getting contributions from all over the pitch. And they will be eager to maintain their five point gap from fifth place heading into the final two matches of the season. Leicester will be too good for Newcastle in this matchup.
Manchester City vs Chelsea
Etihad Stadium, Saturday 12:30pm (ET)
Manchester City have been the best side in the world in the past twelve months, and they’ve got an opportunity to secure a third Premier League title in four seasons when they take on Chelsea at the Etihad. Whilst there isn’t a title at stake for Chelsea, this game is just as important to them, as they need a win to remain in fourth place on the Premier League table, with West Ham just three points behind them.
Both sides will be on a high after winning their Champions League semi finals during the week. Man City have been utterly dominant since the turn of the calendar year, winning 20 of their last 22 league matches. Their recent form against Chelsea will also provide them with plenty of confidence, with the league leaders beating Chelsea in three of their last four Premier League encounters. Kevin De Bruyne has been a big part of City’s success against his old side, with the midfielder scoring four goals and two assists in nine Premier League matches against Chelsea.
Manchester City possess the number one ranked attack and the number one ranked defence in the Premier League this season, just further highlighting how dominant they have been. This game looks set to be one of the best this season with the way both sides are playing. Every challenge that has come Manchester City’s way this season, they have handled and you can expect them to deliver again on Saturday to secure a thoroughly deserved Premier League title.
Liverpool vs Southampton
Anfield, Saturday 3:30pm (ET)
After the postponement of last week’s clash with rivals Manchester United, Liverpool will be fired up when they face Southampton on Sunday. The Saints have won just one of their past five matches and are languishing in sixteenth position on the Premier League table. The defending champs will need to be near perfect in their final four games of the season to keep the chance of playing European football next season alive.
Southampton remarkably beat Liverpool back in January, however Liverpool had won the six previous encounters between the two sides. During the Reds six game winning run against Southampton, they outscored the Saints 17-2, with Mo Salah scoring seven goals. Southampton are set for another tough day keeping Salah at bay, with the Egyptian scoring twenty goals this season, the second most in the Premier League. With Chelsea playing Manchester City this weekend, Liverpool have a golden opportunity to gain ground in the battle for fourth place.
The Reds could be just one point behind Chelsea heading into Matchday 36 if Chelsea slip up this weekend, and the Reds win their game in hand. Liverpool have completely dominated Southampton in recent times, and despite the Saints upset earlier in the season, the Reds won’t have any troubles in this clash. With so much on the line for Liverpool, expect a convincing performance from the defending champs.
