Champions League MD4 Betting Picks
FC Porto vs Atletico Madrid
Tuesday December 7th, 3.00pm (ET)
Plenty on the line for both of these sides as they square off on Tuesday afternoon. Atletico Madrid face missing the knockout stage for just the 2nd time since the 2010 season as they currently sit at the bottom of Group B. Luckily, they are level with AC Milan and just one point behind FC Porto, so a win here combined with a Milan draw or loss to
Liverpool would see the Spanish side move through to the knockout stage.
It’s a very achievable task for Madrid, who haven’t been in fantastic form in either Champions League or La Liga so far this season, but still possess one of the most structured and solid defences in world football, which should hold them in good sted here.
When these two teams squared off earlier in the group stage, the game ended in a 0-0 draw, a result that could potentially see them both eliminated from the Champions League if it were to repeat. I think this game will be played more aggressively, and it’s hard to look past Madrid, who have a fantastic record in these crucial group stage games.
Bayern Munich vs Barcelona
Wednesday 8th December, 3.00p m (ET)
Any other year, seeing this matchup in the final game of the group stage would likely be a dead rubber as both teams will have already racked up enough points to advance. However, with Barcelona’s struggles this season, they are in danger of missing the knockout stage for the first time since the turn of the century, currently finding themselves just two points clear of Benfica in 2nd place of Group E.
A loss to Bayern and a Benfica win over the bottom placed Dynamo Kiev would see Barcelona eliminated from the Champions Leauge. To say they have a lot to play for here would be an understatement as they attempt to protect a 20+ year long streak of knockout stage appearances.
Bayern Munich has been a near untouchable entity in both domestic and European competition this season. They have a 5-0-0 record in the Champions League and also sit atop the Bundesliga with a 11-1-2 record. The one thing in Barcelona’s favour though, is the fact that the German side doesn’t really have much to play for here. They will likely be in cruise control after having already secured top spot in Group E. With so much more on the line, back the Spanish side to secure at least a draw here.
Atalanta vs Villareal
Wednesday 8th December, 3.00pm (ET)
Group F sees an Italian side and a Spanish side battling it out for the final spot in the knockout stage as Atalanta and Villareal play on Wednesday afternoon. The loser of this game will be sent packing and the winner will move on, while a draw would see Villareal advance as they currently have a slight one point advantage.
Atalanta have been the more in form side of the two in their respective domestiv competitions, currently sitting in fourth place in the Serie A with a 10-4-2 record. They will need to be more aggressive in this game than they have been in domestic games though, as a draw just won’t cut it if they wish to advance.
I think the need to win for Atalanta should see them playing a really aggressive style of football early, which could open the floodgates for either side. If there is a goal within the first half an hour of this clash, it could end up being an absolute scoring fest.
