AFL Round 21 Betting Picks
Carlton Blues vs Gold Coast Suns
Marvel Stadium, Friday 11:45pm ET
Carlton kept their finals hopes alive with an impressive 31-point win over St Kilda last weekend. The Blues were buoyed by the return of Charlie Curnow in the forward line and he fit in nicely as they went onto score their second biggest total of the season. Now with eight wins to their name, the Blues are just one win behind eighth spot.
Gold Coast enjoyed a fantastic patch of form from Round 16-18, but their last two games have been simply horrible and have put the pressure back on coach Stewart Dew. Since half time of their game against the Lions the Suns have been outscored 41-215, which has seen their percentage take a massive hit.
The Blues are in by far the better form of these two teams and will start as the big favorites to get the job done on their home deck. It’s impossible to side with the Suns after the way they’ve played in the past two weeks, so we’ll be following the Blues here and taking them to cover the spread.
Hawthorn Hawks vs Collingwood Magpies
UTAS, Sunday 12:10am ET
Hawthorn surprised everyone with a win over a premiership fancy in the Lions last weekend to the tune of 12 points. The win came just days after long-time coach Alistair Clarkson called it quits, so perhaps his team were playing with a bit more urgency. Regardless, the Hawks still find themselves in second last spot on the ladder.
Collingwood also saluted as underdogs in their Round 20 clash, defeating rivals West Coast in comfortable fashion in Melbourne. It was one of the Magpies best four-quarter performances of the season and a blueprint for what they’ll be looking to build from in the next 12 or so months.
With both teams coming off surprise wins, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will back it up in Round 21. With that said, we’ll be looking to play the total points market, which looks a touch too high considering the lack of potency of both team’s forward lines. We see this one finishing at least 10 points under the current total of 160.5 points.
West Coast Eagles vs Melbourne Demons
Optus Stadium, Monday 6:10am ET
West Coast put in yet another disappointing performance when getting pulverised by a lowly and inexperienced Collingwood outfit last weekend. The Eagles were looking to make it three wins in a row for just the second time this season but were unable to get the job done and have left the door ajar for other teams to take their top eight spot.
Melbourne bounced back beautifully from their loss to the Western Bulldogs when thumping the Suns by 98 points last weekend. It was a necessary performance from the Demons as they haven’t quite been at their best in the second half of the season. Regardless, they’re almost certain to lock in a top four spot in what’s been an impressing campaign to date.
The Demons have certainly been the more consistent team of the two clubs in this contest, but you can never count the Eagles out on their home deck, particularly when coming off a lacklustre performance. In fact, we see the Eagles in Perth as our best value play of the weekend.
