AFL Round 16 Betting Picks
Melbourne Demons vs GWS Giants
MCG, Friday 11:45pm ET
The Demons were able to shake off a fast-finishing and determined Bombers outfit in Round 15 to chalk up their 12th win of the season from 14 games. Once again it was the defense of the Demons that was the difference, repelling attack after attack in the final term to help secure the win and remain in top spot on the ladder.
The Giants got the jump on the Hawks in their most recent outing to lead by four goals in the first quarter, however, it was all Hawthorn from that point onwards with the Giants pressure and desire falling away dramatically. That loss was already their seventh loss of the season, which means they’ll need to be clutch from this point onwards.
The Demons are quite clearly the better team in this matchup and are the deserving favorites, particularly on their home deck. However, they haven’t been at their best over the past couple of rounds and the 5+ goal spread may prove difficult to cover. Instead, we’re keen to back in the total points to sail over the 156.5 total, which has been the case in each of the last seven meetings between these sides when the full 20-minute + time on quarters have been in play.
Fremantle Dockers vs Carlton Blues
MCG, Saturday 5:40am ET
The Dockers were able to hold strong against a determined Magpies outfit on the road to win by two goals. They managed to secure that win despite their captain and best player in Nat Fyfe pulling out just before the game, which makes it all the more impressive and also keeps their chance of playing finals alive.
The Blues capped off a good week with a win over the Crows by 10 points at home. That win followed the news that captain Patrick Cripps inked a new six-year deal with the Blues, which is a huge positive for their loyal fans. The Blues are now 5-9 on the season and remain an outside chance of a finals berth.
The AFL have finally decided that this Dockers ‘home game’ will be played at the MCG on Saturday night amid covid complications in Western Australia. Obviously, this favours the Melbourne-based Blues a great deal and as a result, we have to give them the edge in what should be a pretty close game.
Sydney Swans vs West Coast Eagles
GMHBA Stadium, Saturday 11:10pm ET
The Swans put up an almighty fight as the underdogs against the Power on the road last weekend, but just couldn’t quite get over the line in the end. Despite four goals from superstar Lance Franklin and a gallant effort from his young teammates, the Swans ended up going down by 10 points in their sixth loss of the season.
The Eagles were expected to play their part in a blockbuster showdown with the red-hot Bulldogs at home in Round 15, but obviously didn’t get the memo as they were absolutely dismal from start to finish. They ended up losing by 55 points in what was also their sixth loss of the season and first on their home deck in Perth.
Both teams are coming off defeats and will see this as a winnable game on the neutral ground in Geelong. In saying that, the Eagles have far more upside and have managed to responded fantastically from poor losses in the past. This is certainly a tough game to predict, but with all things considered we have to lean towards the more talented and experience Eagles outfit.
