NBA Futures Betting Picks
Most Valuable Player
The race for Most Valuable Player is sure to be an exciting one this year. Leading the favouritism is reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo at +260 at DraftKings, but we’re avoiding those short odds. Our favourite at +500 odds is none other than 2x MVP Steph Curry. As we all know, Kevin Durant joined the Nets in the off-season and Klay Thompson will likely miss the regular season with an ACL injury. This leaves Steph Curry to do all the heavy lifting on offense with help from new Warrior D’Angelo Russell. We’ve seen Steph average 30 points during one of his MVP years and there’s no reason why that won’t be the case again this season. The key here is the Warriors have to win 50+ games for him to be in the conversation, we believe that’s capable if he stays healthy.
Pick: Steph Curry (+500 DraftKings)
Rookie of the Year
The clear standout to win Rookie of the Year is none other than Zion Williamson. The #1 pick in the draft is the most hyped about rookie since LeBron James and from what we’ve seen from him in the pre-season, it’s more than warranted. The man is an athletic freak that’s already one of the strongest guys in the league. Williamson will be part of a Pelicans team that will probably struggle this season, but team wins are rarely ever considered for this award. There’s not really any value for Williamson, but we certainly don’t recommend laying him.
Pick: Zion Williamson (-155 DraftKings)
6th Man of the Year
Another tough market to predict is the sixth man. We need to find guys that are going to have a specific role that is coming off the bench and putting the ball in the basket. Lou Williams is the short favourite to win the award again, but we’re keen to go around him here. Having Paul George and Kawhi Leonard at the Clippers will certainly see his scoring decline, which opens up the opportunity to oppose him. We’re pretty keen on the Nets sixth man in Spencer Dimwiddie at really nice odds. He’s going to get his 25 minutes a game and he’s going to be in a fairly successful team in the East. Dimwiddie can fill it up with the best of them and is likely going to keep his role as sixth man now that Kyrie Irving is the starting point guard.
Pick: Spencer Dimwiddie (+700 Fanduel)
Defensive Player of the Year
The final market we’re keen to have something on is DPOY. Rudy Gobert is the reigning champion of this award and is the clear favourite to retain the title this year. He’s far too short for our liking however, and we’re keen to play some bigger odds elsewhere. The odds available for former DPOY in Draymond Green particularly caught our eye. He may have had one of his leanest season’s in 2018-19, but now that KD is gone and Klay is injured, Green is going to be as locked in as ever. He’ll get all the big assignments and always fills the stat sheet and is already on the radar as a premier defender. If the Warriors have success this season, Green’s name will certainly be mentioned for this award.
Pick: Draymond Green (+1200 DraftKings)
