Everybody has heard of the Kentucky Derby, but have you ever heard of the Queen’s Plate? It’s essentially the Canadian version of the Kentucky Derby and is the longest running race in North America, dating back to 1860. Think about how much has changed since then. But the racing remains the same.
Woodbine Racing Picks
Race 2 - King Corrie Stakes
The Queen’s Plate Stakes card begins in race number two with the $100,000 King Corrie Stakes. It’s going to be a fast one with seven horses drag-racing 5 furlong on the inner turf course. Don’t blink!
FORESTER’S TURN (PP: 2 ML 2-1) won his last race, which was his first race on grass in seven career starts. He could be even better today as trainer Robert Tiller wins at 24% with horses making their second turf start. Tiller’s win at an even better 31% with horses that won their previous effort.
FRANCATELLI (PP: 5 ML 8/5) won his last race by 9 ½ lengths, a blowout with the top, last race speed figure. He’s gets a jockey upgrade today to Justin Stein, who is winning at a 21% clip. He should be forwardly placed, which is the place to be.
DUKE OF CARTHANIA (PP: 3 ML 6-1) is hoping the favorite, along with a few others that get out of the gate hot, run too fast in the first ¼ mile. He’s probably the best closer in the field and will have an excellent chance to score the win if the first quarter is under 21 seconds.
CAJUN CASSANOVA (PP: 7 ML 5-1) has raced on turf four times in his 10-race career, winning twice with a second. The lone out of the money effort was his last start when he tired out late. Trainer Michael Pino gave him some rest and the horse looks refreshed running a bullet in his last workout.
Win: #2 FORESTER’S TURN
Exacta #2 FORESTER’S TURN or #5 FRANCATELLI to win with #2 FORESTER’S TURN, #3 DUKE OF CARTHANIA, #5 FRANCATELLI or #7 CAJUN CASSANOVA to finish second.
Race 9 - Canadian Stakes
The $250,000 Canadian Stakes lead into the Queen’s Plate with 10 fillies running 1 1/8 miles on Woodbine’s turf course. It’s an uncommon distance for the Canadian course and is sure to test these three-year-old ladies.
THEODORA B. (PP: 1 ML 5-1) won her last start, which was her first try on Woodbine’s turf course in 17 races. She took the field from gate to wire at 1 ¼ miles. This race is an 1/8 mile shorter, which should work to her advantage.
CAMBIER PARC (PP: 10 ML 6/5) has won two in a row, three of her last four, and five of her last seven. She’s coming off a Grade I win at Keeneland for trainer Chad Brown, who wins at a strong 30% with horses shipping in from another track.
ELIZABETH WAY (PP: 3 ML 4-1) finished third behind THEODORA B. in her last race but had all sorts of traffic problems late. She’ll be making her second start following a short rest. Her history suggests she can take a big step forward today, but a clean trip might be all she needs.
AMALFI COAST (PP: 6 ML 6-1) is flipping from Woodbine’s all-weather track to turf. She won the last time she made the same surface switch when going from a 7 furlong race to one at a mile or more. She is an all or nothing horse on Woodbine grass, winning two of four with nothing else.
Win: #10 CAMBIER PARC
Exacta #1 THEODORA B. or #10 CAMBIER PARC to win with #1 THEODORA B., #3 ELIZABETH WAY, #6 AMALFI COAST or #10 CAMBIER PARC to finish second.
Race 10 - Queen's Plate
Much like the KD, the Queen’s Plate was postponed and rescheduled, originally set for the June 27th, but will make its 160th consecutive start on September 12th. A full field of 14 will run 1 ¼ miles on Woodbine’s all-weather track in the 10th race on Saturday’s card.
CURLIN’S VOYAGE (PP: 10 ML 5/2) has won three of his last four races and five of nine lifetime, all at Woodbine. He put the highest, last race speed figure in the books, winning his last start. Trainer Josie Carroll wins after a win at a hefty 24%.
CLAYTON (PP: 12 ML 2-1) has visited the winners’ circle in three of his four outings, finishing second in the lone non-winning effort. He’s has a strong late kick and could be hard to out finish if he is close to the lead in the stretch.
HALO AGAIN (PP: 6 ML 5-1) is a horse for the Toronto course with two wins and a second in three starts. He has just one win in three races anywhere else, scoring in his debut at Churchill Downs. He should be a handful today in his third start off the bench, a 19% winning angle for trainer Steven Asmussen.
MERVEILLEUX (PP: 2 ML 10-1) has finished in the money in six of seven races at Woodbine. He finished fourth in his lone off the board effort. He’s put some of his best training sessions on the track coming into the Queen’s Plate and should be sharp.
Win: #10 CURLIN’S VOYAGE
Exacta #10 CURLIN’S VOYAGE or #12 CLAYTON to win with #2 MERVEILLEUX, #6 HALO AGAIN, #10 CURLIN’S VOYAGE or #12 CLAYTON to finish second.
