The richest event on the PGA Tour calendar, THE PLAYERS, is set to kick off this Thursday from TPC Sawgrass. The event brings together one of the most star-studded fields in golf and as usual, we have you covered with a full preview and betting picks for the tournament below.
THE PLAYERS Betting Picks
THE PLAYERS is annually one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour calendar and with a monster $15 million dollar prize-pool it attracts the best players in the world year after year. This season will be no different, with only five eligible players set to miss the tournament.
The top 10 players in the world will all be in attendance for THE PLAYERS this season in Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Colin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, Patrick Reed, Patrick Cantlay and Webb Simpson.
The five eligible players who will miss the tournament will be Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Matthew Wolff, Zac Blair and Bud Cauley. Rory McIlroy is the reigning champion of the event and will be desperate to defend his title and jump back into the top 10 in the world after falling out of it for the first time in three years this week.
The 2020 edition of THE PLAYERS was cancelled after just the first round due to COVID-19 but previous winners of the event include McIlroy as well as Webb Simpson (2018), Si Woo Kim (2017), Jason Day (2016) and Rickie Fowler (2015).
The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass has been the host of THE PLAYERS since all the way back in 1982. It is a perfectly manucured parkland course that features plenty of water in play, particularly on the 17th island green Par 3, which is one of the most famous holes in all of golf.
The 17th has produced some of the most thrilling moments in PGA Tour history and you can bet that it will provide some more this week.
Outside of the 17th, the course on the whole is suited towards strong tee-to-green players. In recent history, the winners of THE PLAYERS have all ranked inside the top 10 in greens in regulation and it’s something we will be targeting again this season.
There are some big names who we really like the look of this week but there are also some guys a bit further down the betting markets who we think provide some great value.
Dustin Johnson (+1200)
How can you overlook the No.1 player in the world this week? DJ had a bit of a poor performance in his last outing, finishing T54 at the WGC-Mexico. That result marked his first finish outside of the top 12 in 12 tournaments and in that span he had racked up four wins. Has never won THE PLAYERS and we are sure he’ll be keen to add it to his CV.
Xander Schauffele (+2400)
Xander Schauffele is arguably the most consistent player in the world at the moment and is incredibly unlucky not to have a tournament win under his belt already this season. He has finished 2nd on four different occassions and has good pedigree at THE PLAYERS, finishing 2nd to Webb Simpson back in 2018.
Jordan Spieth (+3000)
With Tiger Woods out of the game for the foreseeable future and potentially forever, Jordan Spieth is the hero we need at the moment and his return to form has come at a perfect time. In his last four starts, Spieth has finished T4 at the Waste Management, T3 at Pebble Beach, T15 at the Genesis and T4 at the Arnold Palmer. The kid is back.
Tony Finau +3200
Adam Scott +8000
Justin Rose +15000
