The Northern Trust Betting Picks
Thursday 19th – Sunday 22nd August, Liberty National Golf Course, New York
It was a fantastic finish at the final event of the PGA Tour regular season last week, the Wyndham Championship, as six players tied for the lead with fan favourite Kevin Kisner ultimately taking out the trophy in the six-man playoff. The points on offer at the Wyndham Championship vaulted some players into the all-important top 125 in the FedEx Cup Standings, meaning qualification for the first event of the playoffs.
The top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings will be whittled down to just 70 at the Northern Trust this week before again being slashed to just 30 at the BMW Championship next week. The top 30 on the standings will then compete in the handicapped Tour Championship, with the winner taking home the monster $10,000,000 first prize and the FedEx Cup trophy.
After two wins this season including a major at the Open Championship, Collin Morikawa tops the FedEx Cup standings heading into the first playoff event. The remaining top 10 reads Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Jon Rahm, Abraham Ancer, Bryson DeChambeau, Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Thomas and Sam Burns.
All in all, 125 players will line up, with most of the prominent golfers in the world participating. Some notable exclusions from the event, who failed to finish inside the top 125 include Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Tommy Fleetwood, Francesco Molinari, Henrik Stenson and of course, Tiger Woods.
Liberty National Golf Course was founded in 2006 but has already built up a reputation as one of the premier golf courses in the United States. It has stunning views of the Statue of Liberty across the bays and has played host to some big tournaments in the likes of this FedEx Cup opening event as well as the Presidents Cup.
Liberty National is a stern test of golf, where not one aspect will dominate over another. Players will need to be dialled in with driver, irons, scrambling and putting this week to stand a chance, and course management might be the most important aspect of all.
Past winners at Liberty National include Patrick Reed, Adam Scott and Heath Slocum, while players from the Presidents Cup in 2017 will also have invaluable experience at the course.
Love the look of Patrick Reed this week. As we mentioned above, the No.16 ranked golfer in the world is a past winner at Liberty National and really has a strong all-around game that is needed to compete at the course. He has made the cut in seven of his last eight tournaments, including strong finishes at the Memorial, U.S. Open and the Travelers.

Another who I really like this week is Aussie Adam Scott. He will be desperate to bounce back from a heart-breaking result at the Wyndham on the weekend, where he missed a four-footer in the first hole of the six-man playoff which would have won him the tournament. Alongside Reed, he is the only other player in the field to have won at Liberty National, and comes into the tournament in good form, with the T2 finish coming on the back of five straight cuts made.
