2020-2021 Mayakoba Golf Classic – PGA Betting Preview

The PGA Tour will head south of the border this week for the final event of the year before the Christmas break. The Mayakoba Golf Classic will be played from El Camaleaon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico starting this Thursday.

As usual, we have  gull preview and betting picks for the event below.

Mayakoba Mayakoba Golf Classic Betting Picks

The Field

A pretty solid field has been assembled for the last event of the year down in Mexico. The top ranked player and front-runner for the event will be the No.3 ranked player in the world, Justin Thomas. Alongside JT as the headline attraction will be former world No.1 Brooks Koepka, who will be looking to capitalise on some much needed form he found at the Master a few weeks ago.

Other big names in the field this week include the likes of Harris English, Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland and Rickie Fowler.

The Course

El Camaleon Gold Course in Playa del Carmen, Mexico will host the Mayakoba Classic once again this season. At just over 6,900 yards as a Par 71, the couse isn’t extremely long off the tee, but its location right on the coast usually results in some extremely high winds, making it tricky even for PGA Tour pros if their driving game isn’t up to scratch.

Still, a score in the high teens or low twenties under par usually wins in Mexico, so scoring ability is paramount and course knowledge and management is also key. Will be looking for strong ball strikers who are capable of cutting through the wind to be successful this week.

Picks

Justin Thomas (+600)

Tough to look past Justin Thomas here. If it wasn’t for an absolutely dominant stretch of golf from Dustin Johnson over the last few months, Thomas could have easily had a few tournament wins and potentially a major championship. In his last five tournaments, Thomas has finished T2 at the Tour Championship, T8 at the U.S. Open, T12 at the CJ Cup, T2 at the ZOZO Championship and T4 at the Masters.

He won three times last season and was in the top 10 in 10/18 events. It’s only a matter of time before he picks up his first piece of hardware in the new season this weaker than average field represents a great opportunity.

Other Picks:

Harris English Top 10 (+175 at Pointsbet)

Tony Finau Top 20 (-118 at Pointsbet)

Pat Perez Top 40 (+160 at Pointsbet)
