The UFC returns to the Apex Centre in Las Vegas for this Fight Night which is headlined by a Welterweight fight of bitter rivals Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley which goes all the way back to when they were American Top Team teammates.
This card is full of current and future stars with Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, Niko Price, Johnny Walker and Khamzat Chimaev in action just to name a few. Let’s have a look into some of the main match ups below.
UFC Fight Night Betting Picks
Colby Covington vs Tyron Woodley
It always adds that little extra when there is genuine bad blood between two fighters, and we get that here. Tyron Woodley has lost his last two in the way of clear unanimous decision defeats where he failed to win a single round on the judge’s scorecards. Covington on the other hand had his seven-fight winning streak snapped losing in his title fight to Kamaru Usman in December last year. A win for either man will put them back in the title picture and settle this rivalry.
Woodley is a hard man to tip, for the fact that he has always had limited output, especially against wrestlers. He sits back and looks for his coveted pull back right hand and I see it unlikely that he will get the chance to unleash a power punch against Covington who doesn’t overextend on his punches. Covington will try to smother Woodley with volume until he can get in close to shoot for a double leg.
I expect an interesting first round or two before Covington takes over and it becomes a grind of a fight to watch. Covington gets this done clearly on the judge’s scorecards which will beg the question of what now for Woodley?
Johnny Walker vs Ryan Spann
Tipping Johnny Walker is inherently risky. This time last year he was being hyped up as the man to dethrone Jon Jones but instead saw himself poleaxed by Corey Anderson and then outwrestled by Nikita Krylov. There is no question that Walker is talented, and he could be one of those hype trains that gets derailed and finds himself making his name as a gatekeeper at One FC, but I don’t see it going that way. He is still young at only 28 and with 6 months since his fight against Krylov, who is a ground specialist, I am backing him to bounce back against Ryan Spann.
Spann cannot stand with Walker and will need to get this to the ground. He only was successful on 2 of his 7 takedown attempts in his last fight and I believe he will struggle with the height and range of Walker. Walker keeps this at distance before landing something utterly outrageous and turning Spann’s lights out, reigniting his hype.
Journey Newson vs Randy Costa
If you love action, make sure you don’t miss a second of this fight. Both men are relatively raw but pack a punch. Journey Newson has dabbled in boxing and is a solid striker with an underrated ground game and his opponent, Randy Costa, is a ferocious striker who gasses bad after the first round and a half. The question here is can Newson last the first round with Costa? If you believe he can he should be able to drag a tiring Costa to the mat and finish him. However, I am expecting Costa to starch Newson early.
Costa won all four fights prior to the UFC by knockout in a combined time of 2 minutes and 50 seconds. He was looking like getting another round 1 KO in his UFC debut, but Davis weathered the storm and was able to finish him in the second. What impressed me was him bouncing back against Bostom Salmon getting another first round KO in his last fight. Expect fireworks for as long as it lasts and Costa as the underdog looks the play.
